In recent years, the issue of population and resources has gained much attention from the international community. How to solve population issues and deal with the relationship between population, resources and environment is a major problem that needs to be explored and solved in China and even in the whole world. The book Human-Environment Interactions:An Introduction systematically discusses the complex relationship between human and environment in today’s society from multiple levels.Chapter 6,with the theme of "Population",describes population-related topics from several perspectives, such as the history of population growth, population trends, and the complex relationship between population and environmental impacts. Therefore, the content in this chapter is of reference significance to population issues in our country. The source material of this report is selected from Chapter 6 of Human-Environment Interactions:An Introduction. The original text is an exposition with standardized wording and strict logic. The writer should firstly grasp the meaning of the words accurately, and secondly clarify the author’s logical thinking during translation. The report is mainly described from four parts:task description, translation process description, case analysis and summary.Case analysis is the core of this report. In this part, the writer analyzes the cases from lexical, syntactic and textual levels. At lexical level, the writer focuses on conversion, addition, selection of word meaning, term translation and idiom translation. At syntactic level, the writer analyzes the translation of nominal clauses, attributive clauses and passive sentences as well as division. At textual level, cohesion and coherence are the key points. In this translation process, translation techniques such as addition, conversion, recasting and division are adopted to address the difficulties of translation, which means the writer applies the theoretical knowledge into this translation practice. After this translation practice, the writer not only accumulated some translation experience and skills, but also deepened the understanding of such fields as demography and environmental science, which lays a foundation for the translation of similar texts in the future.
