English-Chinese Translation Practice Report On "The Future Of Recycling Consumption Patterns" (Excerpt

The source text of this translation project is excerpted from The Future of Reusable Consumption Models,a report published in the World Economic Forum in July,2021.The report is produced by the World Economic Forum’s Platform for Shaping the Future of Consumption in collaboration with Kearney.This report will review the whole translation process by comparing the first attempt and the second attempt,and analyze the problems during translation and the process of solving them.It is expected to provide some reference for economic text translation.This report is guided by functional equivalence put forward by Nida.Functional equivalence emphasizes the communicative function of the text,and believes that translation is to reproduce the message of the source text with the closest and most natural equivalence.It also emphasizes that translation should focus on the equivalence of linguistic message and function rather than only the formal equivalence.Therefore,the theory argues that the translator needs to adopt different translation strategies and methods to convey the message of the source text with natural and idiomatic language.The report analyzes how the translator finds and solves the difficulties during translation based on "Comprehension,Expression,Adaptation(CEA)" analysis framework proposed by Li Changshuan.In the translation of terms and proper nouns,the translator comprehends the meanings through context and background knowledge,and then adopts the methods of lexical conversion,free translation and amplification;in the translation of rhetoric,literal translation and free translation are adopted;in the translation of abstract nouns,conversion and amplification are used;in the translation of long and difficult sentences,kernel sentence,division and structural reorganization are adopted to seize the logic among different parts of the sentence and avoid Europeanizing Chinese;and in the translation of parenthesis,embedding,recasting,and amplification are employed to achieve functional equivalence.It is hoped that this translation practice report can provide reference for the translation of economic texts.
