A Report On The English-chinese Translation Of Complex Long Sentences Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Nowadays,with the continuous development and progress of science and technology,mineral resources are applied in many fields including: mobile phones,computers,automobiles,airplanes and some infrastructure areas for national security and economic development which involves cutting-edge medical care,transportation,power generation,military equipment and so on.Mineral resources have increasingly become the basis of national economic development and national defense security and issues related to mineral resources are also important matters in modern international politics.As a country with the most abundant mineral resources in the world,China should pay more attention to the relevant regulations and practices of other countries in mineral resources and make full use of China’s advantages in mineral resources to carry out international cooperation.The translation is an executive Order----A Federal Strategy to Ensure Secure and Reliable Supplies of Critical Minerals----issued by American President Donald Trump on December 20,2017,which proposed six calls to action for authorities concerned to take action to reduce the vulnerability of supply chains of the U.S.critical mineral resources.The source text is characterized by many technical terms and complex long sentences.The original text is an executive order,which is a kind of informative text and requires accurate translation,faithfulness to the original text,fluent expression,and comprehensibility to the readers of the target language.Nida’s functional equivalence theory were used in this practice report to guide translation tasks and case studies,mainly at the levels of information equivalence and expression equivalence to address common difficulties in translating complex long sentences.The methods used include reorganization of sense groups,reasonable punctuation,amplification and conversion of part of speech and specific translation cases are given.This report is divided into five chapters,including a introduction,a task description,a translation process,a case analysis,and a conclusion.In this translation practice report,the translator summarizes the issues that have been found during the translation process,presents reasonable solutions and also draws corresponding conclusions,hoping to guide the future translation practice work.
