Abstract/Summary:
In 1979,the era of democratic Cambodia came to an end,and Cambodia officially entered the "people’s Republic of Cambodia" period, but the turbulent regime of Cambodia has not changed.due to a long period of war and political instability, the film industry in Cambodia has stagnated for a long time, entering the contemporary era,the situation in Cambodia has gradually stabilized, and the film industry has begun a difficult recovery.According to the theory of post-colonialism,in the process of colonizing the East, the West closely combined knowledge with power, the academic served the colonial rule of imperialism, and gradually implemented the means of assimilation in the cultural fields such as literature and art in the East. And the East gradually tends to the West unconsciously. As a country that has been colonized by France for 90 years, the shadow of cultural colonization exists everywhere in the contemporary films of Cambodia, which presents a unique film production paradigm in the conflict between Khmer culture and western civilization. This paper takes the Cambodian films from 1979 to 2021 as the research object.Due to the special colonial background of Cambodia, the subjectivity of Cambodian film culture has been greatly impacted. This paper expands the scope of study from "films made in Cambodia" to "films shot in Cambodia".On the one hand,it makes a post-colonial analysis,on the other hand,it makes a systematic and in-depth study combined with the law of the development of contemporary Cambodian films. This paper attempts to summarize the characteristics of the development of contemporary films in Cambodia. This paper will discuss the contemporary films of Cambodia through the following five aspects:The first chapter mainly summarizes the social background of the formation of Cambodian contemporary film culture. The history of colonization and aggression makes the development of Cambodian contemporary film complex and tortuous. The second chapter discusses the identity background and creative characteristics of contemporary Cambodian filmmakers. In the post-colonial context, local filmmakers pursue the subjectivity of Khmer culture, while the creation of overseas filmmakers reflects the sense of cultural separation between the East and the West.Western filmmakers in Cambodia all embody the imagination of the East. The films created by authors with different cultural identities constitute the conflict between culture and ideology in contemporary films. The third chapter analyzes the presentation of multiple themes of contemporary films in Cambodia.Local films strive to grasp real and objective discourse power under the background of cultural colonization, while films dominated by the West embody obvious western narrative mode.under the same theme, there are conflicts in social and historical memory. The fourth chapter is the reconstruction of the film industry in Cambodia. This chapter analyzes the development of the film industry in Cambodia through the revitalization plan of the film industry, the development of film education and the establishment of international film festivals. It is found that the contemporary film industry is still in its infancy from a global point of view, and is still subject to the West in terms of economy and technology, but the film industry in Cambodia is still trying to explore a new way.The fifth chapter analyzes the co-production and film cultural exchanges between Cambodian films and other countries, and finds that in various film activities in Cambodia,Western countries continue to instill their own culture in Cambodia, which has an obvious intention of cultural colonization.Driven by the "Belt and Road Initiative" policy,China has played a strong role in the revival of Cambodia’s local film industry. In the context of globalization, the spread of Cambodian films is also looking for new forms. To sum up,we can see the overall situation of the development of contemporary films in Cambodia.Under the background of post-colonialism,there are both opportunities and challenges for the development of the world film industry.Cambodian films are still trying to explore a new way in the cultural conflict between the East and the West. The transmission of national culture in Cambodian films especially needs wisdom and strategies.
