A Simulated Practice Report Of Simultaneous Interpreting On China-ASEAN 5G Network Construction And Application Forum

This report reviews an on-site simulated practice of simultaneous interpreting.The practice simulated on site features actual working conditions of conference interpreting,offering an excellent opportunity for the interpreter to accumulate experience,examine his interpreting competence and conduct retrospective observation for improvement.The interpreter attended the China-ASEAN 5G Network Construction and Application Forum,and he took the occasion as an opportunity to simulate an on-site practice of simultaneous interpreting.This report is an analysis and reflection of the interpreter’s practice.This report includes five parts,namely task description,pre-interpreting preparation,case analysis,post-interpreting review and conclusion.The task description introduces the Forum background,the source of this opportunity for the practice and the purpose of the practice.The pre-interpreting preparation lays out both long-term and short-term pre-interpreting preparations,with the former covering language proficiency,knowledge accumulation and interpretation skills,and the latter including thematic background,subject knowledge and terminology as well as on-site documents and adaptability.In the case analysis,difficulties encountered are presented and analyzed under the Effort Model for SI,such as dense information,specific technical terms,speaker’s deviation,verbose redundancies and logical distortion.Corresponding coping tactics are discussed and proposed,including rehearsal before interpreting,explaining or paraphrasing,quick access to prepared terminologies,delaying the response,anticipating,etc.The conclusion highlights the importance of pre-interpreting preparation and rehearsal,and verifying the value of applying Effort Model for SI as a tool to provide analysis and guidance for improving interpreting competence.This report aims at identifying problem triggers in the interpreter’s practice and improving his interpreting competence through retrospective observation and self-reflection.The interpreter also hopes to offer some reference and provide insight for other conference interpreting practitioners.
