As an integral part of Chinese painting,Freehand flower-and-bird painting has its own unique spiritual connotation.The brush and ink is the method and means of expression that embodies its spiritual connotation.Since ancient times,Chinese painting has placed great emphasis on brush and ink,and the form of the brush and ink often determines the style of the work and the spirit of the times.It is therefore significant that the modern transformation of the brush and ink form in Chinese painting has been chosen as the object of study.Furthermore,looking at the history of Chinese painting,we can clearly see that due to the environment and the constant collision of ideas since the twentieth century,the world of Chinese painting has flourished and masters have emerged frequently.This is why we have chosen to study the brush and ink forms of Chinese painting in the twentieth century,to explore how the brush and ink forms of this period were transformed towards modernity.The innovation of this paper lies in the fact that the transformation of the brush and ink forms in twentieth-century Chinese painting of birds and flowers is specifically analysed as an academic topic.It also links calligraphy to the transformation of large-captioned flower and bird painting,identifying the reasons for the transformation of the brush and ink form in large-captioned flower and bird painting from the difference between "calligraphy" and painting.The transformation of the brush and ink form of large-captioned flower and bird painting can be seen more clearly by sorting through its veins,as well as the characteristics of the times.The paper begins with what is meant by Freehand brushwork,and gives some criteria for judging the spirit of Freehand brushwork.Secondly,by summarising the brush and ink form of Freehand brushwork flower and bird painting before the twentieth century,from the early reduced brush painting to the real change in the brush and ink of Freehand brushwork flower and bird painting,to the Yuan Dynasty and the brush and ink form of Freehand brushwork flower and bird painting under the mind of Wang Yangming,we gain a certain understanding of the traditional Freehand brushwork brush and ink form.This is followed by a study of how the twentieth-century brush and ink form of capitalist flower and bird painting transformed into the modern era,providing an overview of the historical development background of the twentieth century and pointing out three of the most important influences on the transformation of the brush and ink form of capitalist flower and bird painting,namely: the influence of the monumentalist trend on capitalist flower and bird painting from the nineteenth to the early twentieth century,the "writing ’ and contemporary Western expressionist thinking,and the stirring of hearts and minds inspired by the social transformations of the early twentieth century.This is followed by a list of three forms of how the transformation took place,the traditional type,the fusion of East and West,and the Westernized type.Finally,a summary study of the achievements of twentieth-century painting of birds and flowers is presented to lay the foundation for the study of birds and flowers in the twenty-first century.
