Under the background of innovation driven development, only by closely following the trend of the times and constantly creating new products or services that meet the needs of the public can enterprises maintain their competitive advantage and achieve sustainable and high-quality development. However,in the process of pursuing innovation, taking into account organizational resources, development strategy, market environment and other factors, enterprises will formulate formal processes and systems to restrict employees’ innovation behavior, screen employees’ innovative ideas and retain the parts they think are beneficial to organizational development. When employees’ innovation is blocked,if employees believe that their innovative ideas can create value for the organization, then employees may take an informal way to innovate privately, that is,bootleg innovation. At present, most studies focus on the impact of a single leadership behavior on bootleg innovation. However, the consistency between single leadership behavior and organizational management practice is low.Ambidextrous leadership can better meet the various needs of employees and organizations because of its dynamic transformation, contradiction inclusiveness and cognitive flexibility. At the same time, ambidextrous leadership has been proved to be able to stimulate employees to carry out innovative activities. Therefore, this study will explore the impact of dual leadership behavior with Chinese cultural characteristics(authoritarian-benevolent leadership)on employees’ bootleg innovation. In addition, the role of leadership behavior on employee behavior is often realized through the relationship between employees and leaders and employees’ own factors. Therefore, this study will introduce two variables: leader member exchange and thriving at work to further explore the mechanism of the impact of authoritarian-benevolent leadership on employees’ bootleg innovation behavior.Based on social exchange theory,self-determination theory and resource conservation theory, this study discusses the impact of authoritarian-benevolent leadership on bootleg innovation and the chain intermediary role of leader member exchange and thriving at work. This study conducted a questionnaire survey on 516 enterprise employees in Beijing,Qingdao,Jinan,Chengdu,Hefei at two time points by using the Benevolent Leadership Scale, the Authoritarian Leadership Scale, the Leader Member Exchange Scale, the Thriving at Work Scale and the Bootleg Innovation Scale.Through the analysis of the collected relevant data, the following conclusions are obtained:(1)authoritarian-benevolent leadership has a significant positive impact on employees’ bootleg innovation behavior;(2)leader member exchange plays an intermediary role between authoritarian-benevolent leadership and employees’ bootleg innovation;(3)thriving at work plays an intermediary role between authoritarian-benevolent leadership and employees’ bootleg innovation;(4)leadership member exchange and thriving at work play a chain intermediary role between authoritarian-benevolent leadership and bootleg innovation. In conclusion,in management practice, leaders can more adopt the ambidextrous leadership mode of authoritarian-benevolent,establish high-quality exchange relations with employees, and pay attention to improving employees’ sense of thriving at work,so as to effectively stimulate employees’ bootleg innovation behavior and provide scientific guidance,so that this behavior can create value for the organization and promote the healthy development of the enterprise.
