Abstract/Summary:
Enhancing second language learners’ linguistic sensitivity and productively improving second-language skills,correcting grammatical errors in the Chinese language is also one of the most common types of questions in exams.The ability in correcting grammatical errors is rather crucial during both second language teaching,which has a direct impact on wether the output of language learning is accurate.As there are language points students often make make mistakes,the correction in grammar could be challenging in exams,targeting this language point to test whether students have acquired it.This paper presents a complete analysis of the result of 17 international students(of 9 nationalities)in a first-year undergraduate class of Chinese language majors doing the "corrected sentences" assignment for a whole academic year.These correction practice are derived from textbooks,Volume 2(top and bottom)and Volume 3(3)(top and bottom),used by learners,which generally corresponded to the language points examined in the text.We grouped all grammatical errors into five categories: omission,redundant wording,incorrect order,wrong substitution,and misuse.With the five types of errors,the outcomes of the 17 students ’ work are divided into the following five scenarios: grammatically correct,the semantics remained the same with minimal changes;grammatically correct,the semantics remained the same but with more changes;grammatically correct,the semantics deviated;grammatically incorrect,the semantics deviated;and other cases.By examining the results of learners’ grammatical amendments,this paper analyzes the causes of learners’ defective error correcting.It is noticed that the primary factors leading to learners’ poor amendment can be summarized as below.First,learners failed to understand the regulated utilization of the Chinese grammatical system at all tiers.Second,learners are not clear about the linguistic points being examined in exams.Third,the points of language examined are too scattered.Given the circumstances,teachers and students can improve their competence in correcting grammatical errors from the both instructional practical aspects,bringing out the counterbalance on grammar teaching.Simultaneously help learners to achieve the purpose of enhancing their abilities in using Chinese,and is expected to provide reference for prospective grammar teaching for Chinese teachers.
