This thesis digs into the problems causing redundancy in English to Chinese consecutive interpreting based on a case study of the online mock conference,“Covid-19 in Refugee Camp”,main speaker being Ian Newton,Senior Lecturer at the University of Geneva. The author served as an interpreter for the second half of the conference. In this thesis, redundancy is categorized into source-based redundancy, namely the redundant information in source speech which remains in interpretation, and interpretercreated redundancy.Generally, the cause for source-based redundancy lies in information processing and noting, while the cause for interpreter-created redundancy relates to notereading and language problems. In this case, particularly, the noting-related problems are:(i)too many useless notes,(ii)lack of logic in notes, and(iii)reading too few notes at one time;the language problems are:(i)overuse of English Chinses(Engnese),(ii)loose sentence structure,(iii)overuse of pet phrases and long expressions.Given these problems, corresponding solutions are posed respectively, they are:(a)prioritize important information,(b)highlight logic in notes,(c)cultivate the habit of reading ahead,(d)strengthen colloquial Chinese,(e)use simple sentence expressions,(f)avoid pet phrases. The solutions should be useful for the author in future interpreting practices to effectively reduce redundancy.Since redundancy is a common problem for student interpreters, the coping strategies and analyzing method in this thesis might be helpful.
