Intangible cultural heritage is an important symbol of a country and nation’s historical and cultural achievements. It is of great significance for studying the evolution of human civilization and plays a unique role in showing the diversity of world culture. It is the common cultural wealth of mankind. Therefore, its distinctive regional characteristics and unique national style should be expressed in the dissemination of intangible cultural heritage. In the process of translation, how to accurately convey these cultural languages with national characteristics to the target language readers is a critical issue. The semantic translation and communicative translation proposed by Newmark provide some useful inspiration and guidance for solving this problem.Semantic translation focuses on the transmission of the source culture and tries to reproduce the expression of the original text. While communicative translation pays more attention to the attitude and reaction of the target language readers to the translated text.Taking the chapter one to five from Intangible Cultural Heritage from Inheritance to Dissemination as an example, the translator, based on Newmark’s translation theory and the characteristics of intangible cultural heritage texts, makes an in-depth analysis and summary of the English translation practice, aiming to provide some reference value for the translation research of such texts.Based on Newmark’s translation theory and the analysis of the text characteristics of Intangible Cultural Heritage from Inheritance to Dissemination, this report describes the main points and analysis in translation from three levels: vocabulary, syntax and discourse. At the lexical level,it is difficult to effectively and accurately translate four-character words; At the syntactic level,it is difficult to find the right subject, accurately divide the sentence structure and ensure the authentic expression of the translation; At the textual level,it is difficult to find the right sentence tense, break through the cultural barrier and ensure the cohesion and coherence of the discourse. At last, under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation, the translator makes a detailed analysis of the cases in the report by using a variety of translation skills such as part of speech conversion, amplification, reorganization, division, etc. All in all, this report provides some feasible translation methods for the translation of intangible cultural heritage, and makes a positive contribution to promoting the “going out” of China’s intangible cultural heritage into the world.
