A Report On The Long Sentence Translation Of The Handbook Of The Political Economy Of Financial Crises(Excerpts) From The Perspective Of The Communicative Translation

The Handbook of the Political Economy of Financial Crises includes many world renowned economists’ articles.According to Peter Newmark’s text category theory,this book is an informative text that contains many long and complex English sentences which are difficult to be translated but the key point is that the translator must deal with them.The translator will make a report on the basis of the Chinese translation for the long English sentences of the first two chapters of this book.According to Peter Newmark’s text category theory,translators should translate English long sentences of informative texts from the perspective of communicative translation theory.It is emphasized that the translated texts should be easy to be accepted by its readers through communicative translation on the basis of the transmission of original information.In order to achieve this goal,translators should always put readers in the first place.If the forms of the original texts are acceptable to their readers,the forms should be kept as many as possible.If the original forms are difficult for the target readers to understand,translators adjust them so as to make the translated texts clear and easy to understand and conform to their readers’ habit.In the process of translating The Handbook of the Political Economy of Financial Crises,the translator,guided by the communicative translation theory,adopts five translation methods including: embedding,cutting,reversing,splitting and inserting for different situations of the English long sentences of informative texts on the basis of their different characteristics so as to make the target texts conform to the Chinese reading habits.For those English sentences with long post-modifiers,the translator firstly adopts the embedding method to translate them.When it comes to English long sentences caused by their long subjects,juxtaposition or turning,and long post modifiers which cannot be handled by the embedding method,the translator adopts cutting method to translate them.The reversing method is used by the translator to deal with long sentences caused by conditional adverbials,concession adverbials and cause adverbials.For English long sentences caused by words,phrases and clauses,the translator adopts the splitting method when they cannot be properly translated by embedding cutting,or other methods.At last,when the above four methods can not produce proper Chinese sentences,the translator takes the inserting method to translate those English long sentences of informative texts with explanatory and supplementary components,such as prepositional phrases,non restrictive attributive clauses and some others in parentheses.The translator aims to offer some references and help for improving the translation quality of English long sentences of informative texts.
