A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of Recon Boats Owner’s Manual Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

This translation practice report is based on the E-C translation practice of Recon Boats Owner’s Manual.The original text of this report is selected from Recon Boats Owner’s Manual provided by Recon Company of the United States,and its content mainly includes five major aspects: welcome to board,systems and components,pre-launch or underway,maintenance methods and responsibility,covering many areas such as maritime traffic,first aid methods and equipment use.The original text has the characteristics of objective content,rigorous logic and strong professionalism,and has a large number of professional terms,functional words and nominal structures.At the syntactic level,there are many imperative sentences and passive sentences,and at the discourse level,the text is logical and coherent,and contains a wide range of information.In the process of translation,the translator’s work is based on the three rules of skopos theory.For the translation of terminologies,the translator adopts literal translation and annotation methods.In the translation of function words,the translator uses various methods,such as conversion and omission.While in the translation of nominal structures,the translator adopts conversion.In this manual,there are many imperative sentences and passive sentences,which can be handled by adding subjects or translating the passive sentences into active sentences.There are also sentences in the Recon Boat Owner’s Manual made up of several predicates or verbs,and the logical relationship and coherence of these sentences are not obvious.Taking into account the expression differences between Chinese and English,translation methods such as inversion,free translation and amplification are adopted to make the translation conform to the habits of the target language readers.Through this translation practice,the translator hopes to explore the feasibility of the translation of boat owners’ manuals,so as to provide reference for the Chinese translation of boat owners’ manuals in the future and contribute to the development and cooperation of the boating industry.
