| This report focuses on the E-C translation of financial terms in an excerpt from Two and Twenty:How the Masters of Private Equity Always Win by Sachin Khajuria,a former partner at Apollo,an alternative asset management firm. Many financial terms in this book are critical to understanding how private equity works and pose a challenge to terminology standardization. Therefore, the author aims to focus on the translation of financial terms in the excerpted chapters and explore the translation principles and methods of financial terms.A large number and wide variety of terms characterize financial texts.Regarding the categories of these financial terms, some believe that financial terms include terms of banking, securities, futures, and insurance.Others argue that financial terms can be roughly divided into those specific to the financial field and common terms with financial meaning when applied in the financial context. In addition, scholars summarize the principles to be followed in translating terms, viz.monosemy, motivation, brevity, transparency, systematization, scientificity, and conventionality.Based on the previous research, the author proposes a viable way to classify financial terms from morphological, syntactic, and semantic levels and summarizes the principles applicable to translating financial terms:conventionality, economy, and precision.Subsequently, under the guidance of the above principles, the author divides the text’s financial terms into terms with or without existing translations. To handle the former category, translators should keep to conventions and find the conventional translation, while to deal with the latter group, translators can adopt the methods of zero translation, trial translation, and annotation. This report finds that adopting different translation methods reflects the translator’s trade-off among various translation principles. The conventionality followed in term translation requires translators to search web pages, dictionaries, term databases, and corpora to find the conventional translation. At the same time, the trade-off between economy and precision requires translators to bring forward a new term proposal by adopting the methods of zero translation, trial translation, and annotation to fill the terminological gap. |
