At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the People’s Dynasty,the country was humiliated,people suffered from hardships,intellectuals hoped to change the status quo of the country by establishing women’s schools.They encouraged women to get educated to become civilized citizens.As important medium to connect all social strata,newspapers and magazines are also paying attention to women’s education.However,it is necessary to promote the popularization of the concept of women’s education with the help of the strength of all social strata to make the topic of women’s education deeply rooted in people’s mind.As the longest-running magazine in the history of Chinese women’s liberation,The Lady’s Journal not only undertakes the task of educating women,but also has been given the significance of the times.It undertakes the task of promoting the internalization of women’s studies concepts in the mind of readers and externalizing them in the practice of women’s studies.Therefore,this research will take the texts and images related to women’s education in the early stage of the publication of The Lady’s Journal(that is,the period when Wang Yunzhang was editor-in-chief)as the research object and use the method of content analysis and discourse analysis to investigate how the magazine landed the discourse of women’s education and constructed its rationality.This research will also explore the characteristics of language and image in The Lady’s Journal and the relationship between language and image modal.After research,this thesis finds that in the six years(1915-1920),The Lady’s Journal used language modality and image modality to present the complete significance of women’s education,and the discourses of "good mother and good wife","vocational education" and "physical fitness" used in the magazine cared for each other with the reality of developing women’s studies,industrial salvation,and sports in the society at that time.It is the discourses above giving rationality to women’s education.Furthermore,image modals present the development of women’s studies with reproduction meaning,interactive meaning and compositional meaning.These two modals show a complementary relationship in the magazine.These discourses and the nationalist trends promote the development of women’s education,however,they also put a heavy shackle on women’s education.
