| English and Chinese lexicon is the first English-Chinese bilingual dictionary written by a Chinese,and its author is Kwong Ki Chiu.There are three editions of English and Chinese lexicon,namely the 1868 edition,the 1875 edition and the 1887 edition.The main body of English and Chinese lexicon contains many new things and concepts in the West,and its appendix contains a lot of practical information needed for Chinese and foreign business activities at that time,which not only conveys English knowledge to readers,but also brings a wealth of practical trade information.English and Chinese lexicon promoted the development of Chinese and foreign commercial trade,promoted the exchange and integration of Chinese and foreign cultures,and promoted the formation of practical English in the late Qing Dynasty.This article is divided into six parts:The first part,the introduction.It mainly introduces the research trends of the language,edition,historical background and status of English and Chinese lexicon in the academic circles,and explains the research significance and the research methods adopted.The second part,English and Chinese lexicon overview.General introduction of English and Chinese lexicon and Kwong Ki Chiu’s life,think that Kwong Ki Chiu’s educational background,life experience and work experience laid the foundation for him to write English and Chinese lexicon;An English-Chinese dictionary compiled by the Chinese,which has the dual attributes of a dictionary and a spoken language teaching material;at the same time,it analyzes the historical and practical value of English and Chinese lexicon,and believes that English and Chinese lexicon has been used in trade exchanges,English learning,dictionary compilation,cultural exchange,etymology research and other aspects are of great significance.The third part,comparison of the English and Chinese lexicon versions(1868,1875).Taking the 1868 and 1875 editions of English and Chinese lexicon as the object of comparative research,this paper introduces the general situation and characteristics of the main body and appendix of English and Chinese lexicon in 1868 and 1875,and compares the two editions.The situation explores the Chinese people’s learning needs for English in the 19 th century and the changes in Chinese society;analyzing the characteristics and rules of using Cantonese as some English entries in English and Chinese lexicon,showing the understanding of English phonetics of advanced Chinese intellectuals in the middle and late 19 th century.It analyzes the reasons why Kwong Ki Chiu added dialect phonetic to the entry,and explores the influence of dialect factors on the compilation of dictionary dictionaries;and analyzes the reason for the deletion of Cantonese phonetic in the 1887 edition of English and Chinese lexicon.The fourth part,comparing English and Chinese lexicon with Morrison’s Dictionary of the Chinese language.This paper analyzes the compilation characteristics of Kwong Ki Chiu’s English and Chinese lexicon and Morrison’s Dictionary of the Chinese language,and analyzes the reasons for the differences in the compilation characteristics of the two from four aspects:compilation purpose,audience group,social background,and translation strategy.Analyzing Morrison and Kwong Ki Chiu’s language views,it is believed that the third part of the Dictionary of the Chinese language reflects Morrison’s view of language as "the Western reader’s view",and at the same time emphasizes the combination of language learning and cultural learning,while Kwong Ki Chiu advocates "pragmatism" as his language view.The fifth part,the loanwords of English and Chinese lexicon.This paper briefly expounds the definition principles of loanwords adopted in this paper and the research value of loanwords in English and Chinese lexicon.By comparing the loanwords collected in Etymological Dictionary of Modern Chinese New Words,Modern Etymology and The Great Chinese Dictionary with the examples given,three characteristics of loanwords in English and Chinese lexicon are summarized: similar in shape and meaning,word creation by analogy,and too long translated names.There are three remaining situations of loanwords in the modern Chinese vocabulary system in English and Chinese lexicon: completely used,used after transformation,and elimination.The sixth part,the Cantonese dialect words in English and Chinese lexicon.Kwong Ki Chiu used a lot of Cantonese dialect words to annotate English entries in English and Chinese lexicon,which makes English and Chinese lexicon with a strong dialect color.The reasons for the strong Cantonese dialect color are explored from the aspects of the situation,the characteristics of other English learning materials in the same period,and the dialect writing tradition of the Cantonese dialect area. |
