Experiment Report On The Use Of Consecutive Interpreting Strategies Based On Self-made Corpus

With the extensive exchanges in various fields,Consecutive Interpretation is increasingly used in different types of international conferences.The ability to accurately and fluently convey the speaker’s meaning is an important factor in measuring the quality of interpreting.The quality of interpreting is influenced by the proper choice of interpreting strategies.This thesis takes the experiment of Consecutive Interpretation as the example,selecting 9students from Interpreting Class 2020 and 9 students from Interpreting Class 2021,Master of Translation and Interpreting(MTI),School of Foreign Studies,Capital University of Economics and Business(CUEB)as the research participants.The speech delivered in 2016 by Zhang Haidi,the president of China Disabled Persons’ Federation,at the UN Human Rights Council Social Forum is used as the testing material.With the aid of the corpus tool "BFSU＿Qualitative＿Coder＿1.1",the research explores these 18 students’ use of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting strategies through collecting,transcribing and annotating their test corpus.It was found that most of the strategies used by the two groups were significantly different,including Active Ellipsis(ESA),Semantic Explanation(SME),and Morphemic Addition(MPA).The average number of times that students of Class 2020 used each strategy was 4.6,while that of students of Class 2021 was 3.1.In addition,the average score of interpreting quality of Class 2020 is 83,higher than that of Class 2021,which is 72.However,students in both Classes still need to improve their listening comprehension,note-taking,decoding notes,and language expression.In future courses teaching and self-learning,more attention should be paid to the understanding and proficiency of interpreting strategies,and students can improve the quality of interpreting by increasing the amount of relevant practice.
