This paper investigated the effects of different source language speech rates on the quality of simultaneous interpreting and the translation strategies, using the seventh session of the Sub-Committee on the Implementation of IMO Instruments as the practical materials. The practice report analyses the author’s performances of simultaneous interpreting and the retrospections, and evaluates the performance from the perspectives of accuracy and fluency. The indicators for accuracy are errors and omissions, and the indicators for fluency include pauses and repetitions. It then discusses the use of different translation strategies based on the simultaneous interpreting practice. The author finds that the accuracy of simultaneous interpreting at high SL rate is lower than that at low SL rate, but the fluency of the interpreting at high SL rate is better than that at low SL rate. This report can provide reference for future studies on the effects of speech rates on simultaneous interpreting. The translation strategies discussed in the report can provide some ideas for simultaneous interpreting teaching. This practice report also provides maritime terminology for relevant work and can help to improve knowledge of the Sub-Committee of Implementation of IMO Instruments.
