This is a report based on the English-to-Chinese translation practice of the chapters of five to seven of Linguistic Mitigation in English and Spanish,an academic work written by Nydia Flores-Ferrán,associate professor at Rutgers University.Published by Routledge in 2020,the book is not available in Chinese yet.Combined with multiple examples and theories, the work carries out a comprehensive study on mitigation which is considered as a linguistic phenomenon. It is full of features of a typical academic text that possesses precise words, complex sentences, rigorous structures and clear logics. Therefore, how to deliver the exact meaning of the original text is the main challenge encountered by the translator in this translation practice. In combination with the specific cases, the translator, guided by Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, offers a thorough examination at the three levels of vocabulary, sentence and text on how to adopt different translation methods and techniques to ensure that the translation can precisely convey the original information and get closer to the reading habits of the target readers. At the lexical level, literal translation and part-of-speech conversion are respectively adopted to deal with the technical terms and nominalization in the source text;at the syntactic level, the voice adjustment and division and restructuring are individually used to translate the passive sentences and long and difficult sentences in the original text;at the textual level, amplification is utilized to ensure the accuracy of the original messages and the coherence of the target text.Through this translation practice, the translator has not only improved her translation ability, but also deeply realized that the enhancement of translation skills requires a lot of practical training and the expansion of professional knowledge demands continuous learning. On the basis of this translation,it is hoped that the translator will accumulate experience in translating similar texts in the future, and provide some references for other translation learners.
