South Shanxi is one of the core areas of China’s cultural development,so the historical development and changes of this area and archaeological discoveries in different periods have attracted much attention. In the past,in southern Shanxi during the Zhou period, most archaeological studies focused on tombs and large city sites while there were relatively few studies on the spatial distribution of other types of sites and settlement sites. This article uses the results of the Third National Cultural Relics Survey of Shanxi Province, the 1984-2020 Archaeological Yearbook, and related archaeological excavation reports as data sources, thus assembling a large amount of information on 1859 sites dating from the Zhou period in southern Shanxi.A database was specially designed for this research,in order to extract the information related to each site and make it available for quantitative and spatial analysis. This thesis is divided into 5 chapters as follow:The first chapter mainly describes the basis for choosing this topic, the chronological and spatial framework of the research, and sums up the previous research. The second chapter presents the typological and statistical analysis of the various types of sites and remains in the dataset in the form of statistical charts and tables. The third chapter uses the processed data to create site distribution maps, using a GIS software.Through the settlement archaeological analysis, the present paper sheds light on the settlement distribution characteristics of the Western Zhou and Eastern Zhou periods and on the characteristics of the diachronic changes of the settlement distribution in the southern Shanxi region during the Zhou period. The fourth chapter discusses and explains these diachronic changes in the distribution of settlements, and provides new interpretations on some local settlement changes. Finally, the last chapter summarizes the main results and the shortcomings of this thesis, and finally raises future research questions.
