Economic geography,as the name implies,is a combination of economics and geography.Compared to other traditional disciplines, economic geography is an emerging subject.People’s interest in economic geography is increasing with the rise of globalization, which also encourages further advancement of the field’s study. Therefore, the translation of economic texts pertaining to economic geography is of crucial importance. The selected article,“Why Do Regions Change and Develop? The Challenge for Geography and Economics” was published in Volume 11,Issue 2 of The Journal of Economic Geography in 2011.Professor Michael Storper,an internationally renowned academic, authored the article. As an informative text, the selected article has a clear purpose: to disseminate knowledge of economic geography. Therefore, the present author chooses Skopos theory as the guiding theory of this translation task. The focus of this report is analyzing translation cases under the guidance of Skopos theory.Specifically, terminologies, polysemous words, and compound words will be studied lexically, passive voice, post modifiers, and parentheses syntactically, and cohesion and coherence textually. The report is divided into 5 parts, namely task description, process description, guiding theory, case analysis, and summary.Chapter 1 is task description which tells the significance of the task, task requirements and introduction to the source text.Chapter 2 describes the translation process, including pre-translation preparations, translating process and difficulties in translation.Chapter 3 introduces the guiding theory of this practice and its enlightenment to the translation.Chapter 4 is the main body of the report which analyzes some typical translation cases from three perspectives of lexical level, syntactic level, and textual level.Chapter 5 is the summary where the present author summarizes his gains and shortcomings from this translation practice.Through the practice,Skopos theory proves to be useful in the translation of economic texts. In order to meet the requirements of the three rules, namely the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule. The present author adopts various translation methods, such as omission, conversion of part of speech, division, conversion of voice, amplification, repetition. After all the endeavors, the translation achieves both intra-textual and inter-textual coherence as well as the purpose of this translation task: disseminating knowledge of economic geography. |
