This translation report is based on the English to Chinese translation practice of Understanding U.S.-Latin American Relations(Chapter 8).The author of this book,Mark Eric Williams,discusses the history of U.S.-Latin American relations in conjunction with international relations theory.Chapter 8 focuses on Cuba’s failed progressive alliance to promote modernization and democracy in Latin America after the outbreak of the Cold War,followed by a nonviolent challenge to U.S.hegemony by Latin American countries.This translation project is entrusted by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies of Southwest University of Science and Technology.The author of the report undertakes the translation of the eighth chapter of the book,with a total of 17,023 English words in the source text.Before translation,the author of the report analyzed the content and the linguistic features of the source text,and read parallel texts of Latin America.The source text belongs to informative text.The author of the report uses Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theories to guide this translation practice.Under the guide of semantic translation,the translation methods of literal translation,transliteration and linear translation are taken.Under the guide of communicative translation,the translation methods of conversion,addition,division,and reorganization are used.The translation of Understanding U.S.-Latin American Relations can provide research materials for domestic scholars studying Latin America,who can better understand the relationship between Latin America and the United States,and correctly understand the gap between developing and developed countries from a historical perspective.
