The thesis is a report on the E-C translation of Herbal Houseplants: Grow beautiful herbs indoors!(Excerpts).Written by the contemporary American gardener Susan Betz(1987-),the book describes significant herb species, their merits, and means of growing herbal houseplants. It is an operating manual for aficionados of domestic herb growing. The present author selects the introduction and the first two chapters of the above-mentioned book for her translation project. At the lexical level, the source language text is fraught with botanical and horticultural terms. It also features the nominalization of verbs.Syntactically, passive and complex structures are frequently employed.Overall, with an up-close and personal style for readers, the source language text presents much information in vibrant and lucid English.Having studied Peter Newmark’s theories and principles of translation, text typology in particular, and realized that the source language text in question is an informative text, she deems that the communicative translation approach ultimately achieves the goal and precisely suits the implied readers of the target language text.Consequently, the present author basically applies the communicative translation approach in her work to render the target language text empathically communicative. She adopts amplification, omission and conversion at the lexical level, and division, voice shift and restructuring at the syntactic level.
