Studies On Dialect Reduplication Of Chengdu Tonglan

Chengdu Tonglan is a local chronicle reflecting the social life of Chengdu in the late 19 th century and the early 20 th century.It was compiled and published successively from September of the first year of Xuantong(1909)to June of the second year of Xuantong.The book faithfully restores the basic features of Chengdu dialect at that time,and the research value of its dialectology can not be ignored.This paper mainly focuses on the reduplicative forms of dialects,and explains them from the perspective of synchronic description and diachronic comparison.After a brief introduction of the author,edition,style and layout of "Chengdu Tonglan",this paper analyzes and explains the criteria for defining the selected corpus.It introduces the AA overlapping,ABB overlapping,AAB overlapping and AABB overlapping in Chengdu Tonglan in different chapters.The reduplicated type of dialect words,which appears most frequently in Chengdu Tonglan,is AA type reduplication,whose function is to transform nonnoun morphemes into nouns through reduplication,to transform adherent noun morphemes that can not be independently formed into nouns through reduplication,and to disyllabify monosyllabic nouns,so as to make them have the sense of two-syllable prosody in modern Chinese and to add vivid colloquialism;its semantic function is: besides expressing human beings,most reduplicated nouns contain the meaning of "little",including "little" and "specific",which are the products of people’s subjective consciousness.ABB overlaps in Chengdu Tonglan are mostly adjectives,with only a small part being nouns.The combination of root morpheme A and reduplicated suffix BB in ABB adjective has almost no limitation of parts of speech,but needs strong relevance between words and meanings.ABB noun from root morpheme A and BB constituent nature,there are a variety of categories,root morpheme A and BB categories,often determines the grammatical structure of the word.The AAB type reduplication in "Chengdu Tonglan" has only nouns,among which the constituent parts of morpheme A are more diverse,and morpheme B is almost all nouns.Whether A is a noun,an adjective,a verb or a quantifier,the reduplicated AA almost qualifies B and highlights the characteristics of the thing.These AAB forms overlap in the form of "AA B","A + AB",and "A + A + B" as a closely related whole.The AABB overlapping in Chengdu Tonglan is composed of one single syllable morpheme overlapping and another single phoneme overlapping,two double syllable reduplicated morphemes juxtaposing,and the whole AABB is a morpheme.Adjective overlapping AABB not only has the meaning of repetition,but also has the function of description.Noun overlapping AABB has the meaning of "many quantity".Onomatopoeia AABB means sound is longer and continuous.This paper also roughly analyzes the restrictive factors of AABB type of adjective reduplication and verb reduplication in terms of structure and semantics.While describing and interpreting the characteristics of various overlapping forms in Chengdu Tonglan,this paper also compares them with those in Chengdu Dialect Dictionary.From Chengdu Dialect Dictionary,we can see that AA type,ABB type,AAB type and AABB type have always been important ways of word formation in Chengdu dialect.From " Chengdu Tonglan" to " Chengdu Dialect Dictionary ",the word-formation characteristics,grammatical structure,internal levels and semantic functions of these reduplicated forms in Chengdu dialect have not changed much.However,with the development of the society,some new words come into being and some old words gradually die out,which makes some new words appear one after another.
