A Project Report On E-C Translation Of The Excerpts From Adapting To Climate Change:Markets And The Management Of An Uncertain Future

In recent years,climate change has triggered frequent extreme weather events such as torrential rains and droughts,causing serious economic losses worldwide,especially in developing countries.Therefore,how to improve the climate resilience of cities and adapt to new threats have become important topics for governments and many disciplines.For this reason,the author selects Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 of Adapting to Climate Change:Markets and the Management of an Uncertain Future as the source text,which mainly discusses how individuals,companies,and governments interact to predict climate risks more precisely,and then take feasible measures to promote macroeconomic stability.As the source text is an economics monograph,the author combines its language characteristics and uses Gideon Toury’s translation norms theory as guidance to deal with the three levels of translation difficulties: vocabulary,syntax and rhetoric.First,the author uses annotation and word of selection to explain and define technical terms and semi-technical terms respectively,and uses free translation and corresponding translation to translate idioms;Second,methods such as amplification,syntactic linearity,division,and inversion are adopted to make compound sentences more in line with the standard of the target language.Finally,the author adopts semantic extension,fuzzy translation for fuzziness and literal plus free translation to translate fuzzy nouns and quantifiers as well as figurative sentences,making them more acceptable to target readers.The significance of this translation practice is mainly reflected in the following two aspects: firstly,it helps readers to enhance the awareness of climate risk,and can also provide examples for market entities to cope with climate shocks;secondly,under the restriction of the social and cultural norms of the target language,the author uses translation norms as guidance to translate economic text,and explores methods and strategies in the actual translation difficulties,wishing to provide some references for other translators to translate texts of similar subjects.
