Translation Strategies For Nominalization In Meteorological Sci-Tech Text From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Climate change is gradually evolving into an important global public health issue,so the translation works in this field at home and abroad are of great significance.The source text of this report is taken from Global Climate Change and Public Health edited by Kent E.Pinkerton and William N.Rom.The book focuses on the impact of global climate change on public health and corresponding mitigation measures,with the aim of raising public awareness of climate change.The source text is classified as the meteorological sci-tech text,whose language and structure are official and rigorous.In this text,nominalization is frequently applied.Given that nominalization is abstract and difficult to understand,it poses some challenges to translation.Skopos Theory regards translation as a purposeful act of cross-cultural communication,which promotes the transformation of translation theory from the linguistic level to the functional level.Considering the readers’ cultural background,expectations of the translation and communication needs,and to ensure the fluency and authenticity of the translation,Vermeer’s Skopos theory is taken as the theoretical guidance.Based on the three principles of Skopos theory,this report discusses the translation of nominalizations in terms of verb nominalization,adjective nominalization and nominalization of clauses.At the same time,the translator adopts translation strategies such as conversion,amplification,division and reconstruction,in the hope of providing a reference for the translation of nominalization.This report is composed of five chapters in total.The first chapter briefly introduces the translation project,which gives an introduction to the significance of this research as well as an overview of the source text.The second chapter describes the translation process in detail.Chapter three introduces the theoretical basis and nominalization,and the applicability of Skopos Theory to nominalization translation is also expounded.Chapter four is the case study,in which the translator classifies the nominalization structures into three categories and discusses the translation strategies with specific cases under the guidance of Skopos Theory.Chapter five summarizes the findings and deficiencies of the entire translation process.
