In an intimate relationship, the balance of relationship power is conducive to the maintenance of the relationship, increases relationship satisfaction, and strengthens commitment. It is important to explore the relationship between relational power and commitment.Relationship power is defined as the ability to change a partner’s thoughts, feelings,or behavior in a relationship to align it with one’s desired preferences and to resist your partner’s influence. Some researchers have found that relational power strengthens commitment, but others believe that relational power reduces commitment. What role does relational power play in intimate relationships? What is the impact on commitments? Is the main concern of this paper.John Gray,a well-known expert in gender relations, said that "men come from Mars, women come from Venus",in the face of feelings, the way of thinking between men and women is different, men are more rational, and women are more emotional. At the same time, there are gender differences in the expression of feelings of power, and these differences lead to differences in cognition, emotion, and will for men and women.Does gender have a moderating effect on the sway of relational authority on dedication and contentment in the relationship? How exactly does relational power affect men’s and women’s commitment and relationship satisfaction? This is also the question that this study will explore. From a new perspective, this study proposed a moderating mediation model for the influence of relationship power on commitment. We postulated that in close relationships,a positive correlation exists between relationship power and commitment, satisfaction in the relationship plays a mediating role in the impact of relationship power on commitment, and women’s relationship power is positively correlated with commitment and satisfaction, with a higher correlation than men’s.In Study 1,we explored the relationship between relationship power, commitment, relationship satisfaction, and gender, and selected adults with more than three months of relationship experience as participants(N=530).Relational power’s negative influence on commitment is demonstrated by the results, satisfaction mediates between power and commitment, and gender moderates between power and commitment.Men’s commitment is more susceptible to relational power than women.Study 2 initiated the subjects’ relational power(N=360)through experimental manipulation, and explored the relationship between relational power and commitment with more ecological validity, and analyzed the role of gender in it.The results showed that relational power and commitment were significantly negatively correlated, satisfaction played a mediating role in the influence of relational power on commitment, and gender played a moderating role in the influence of relational power on commitment.Relational power can negatively predict men’s commitment, while women’s relationship power and commitment are not significantly correlated. The results of Study 3 demonstrate that relational power has a positive correlation with commitment, satisfaction acts as a mediator between the two,and gender moderates the relationship. To further explore this,141 couples or couples were selected as participants, and experimental manipulation was used to activate their relationship power.Relational power has a significant positive predictive effect on women’s commitment, while men’s commitment has a significant negative predictive effect.Study 4 adopts the causal chain design method to reduce the error of the measurement of intermediary variables to improve the model.Study 4a was divided into two consecutive small studies,Study 4a initiated the relationship power of 166 couples or couples through experiments, exploring the relationship between relationship power and commitment and satisfaction; In study 4b,the mediating variable, namely relationship satisfaction(N=298),was manipulated experimentally to test the relationship between relationship power and commitment again, and to analyze The results revealed a negative correlation between relationship power and commitment, while satisfaction acted as a mediator between the two,and gender moderated the effect of relationship power on commitment.Conclusions:(1)Relational power has a negative predictive effect on commitment.(2)Relationship satisfaction plays an intermediary role between relationship power and commitment, relationship power will promote the improvement of satisfaction, and satisfaction will further promote the improvement of commitment.(3)Gender plays a moderating role between relational power and commitment, and men’s commitments are more affected by relational power than women.Male relational power can negatively predict male commitment. This study’s innovation is to first propose that gender has a moderating effect on the connection between relationship power and commitment, with distinctions in the impact of relationship power on commitment between different genders, that is,male relational power has a significant negative predictive effect on commitment, male commitment is more likely to be affected by relationship power, while women’s commitment is not easily affected by relationship power, that is,women’s commitment is more stable than men’s.In terms of methodology, this study breaks through the individual perspective of the unpaired sample in previous studies and provides a new perspective for the relationship power influence commitment from the perspective of the male and female gender of the paired sample. In this study, the mediation model is validated for the first time in the field of intimacy using causal chain design. The Relational Power Scale(RPI)is adopted that also takes into account the differences in power in different areas of the two parties to the intimate relationship.New evidence for intimate relationship research. This study helps to guide individuals in love to clarify the level of their relationship power, reasonably view the relationship between relationship power and commitment, actively respond to problems in intimate relationships, and promote relationship quality.
