This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of Apocalypse Never: Why environmental alarmism hurts us all(Excerpts).It is a popular science book written by Michael Shellenberger,a prominent environmentalist with more than 20 years of experience on environmental and climate issues.The sixth and seventh chapters of the book are selected as the source text,which mainly introduces that the exploration of oil and gas has saved the whales because of the emergence of alternatives to whale oil and people should have the right attitude towards the vegetarian.Generally speaking,the source text belongs to informative and vocative text.In conveying objective information,a large number of terminologies and passive sentences are used.Besides,the source text contains many proper nouns and quotes various opinions and sayings.As a popular science text,though the language is plain and simple,there are long and complex sentences and some detailed description.This report focuses on how to deal with typical translation difficulties under the guidance of the Skopos Theory.In terms of lexical level,the translation of terminologies could be guided by the rule of fidelity and the translator consulted dictionaries,online resources,and parallel texts,etc.Besides,the translator adopted literal translation,liberal translation and amplification to achieve the accuracy and professionalism.For the translation of proper nouns,the translator mainly adopted the methods of transliteration and amplification.At the syntactic level,the skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule are applied,and the translator mainly adopted the division and voice conversion to deal with long sentences and passive sentences.As for the cohesion and coherence at the textual level,the translator followed the coherence and fidelity rule and applied repetition and adding conjunctions to ensure the strict logic and coherence of the translation.The translation report is the showcase of how the Skopos Theory is applied to the translation of popular science book and it is hoped to provide some reference for the translation of environmental and climate texts in the future.
