| This report on simulated C-E consecutive interpreting aims to analyze the interpreting assessment, the interpreting strategies and techniques to improve Chinese-English interpreting performance as well as pre-interpreting preparations. The material chosen for this consecutive interpreting comes from “the Significance of China’s Covid-19 Pandemic Prevention and Control to the World”,one of the episodes from the TV program China Now.Based on the Interpretative Theory of Translation, there are four chapters in this report: Chapter One outlines task background information and task aims.It also details pre-interpreting preparations in terms of subject matter, speaker profile and resources necessary for interpreting preparations.Chapter Two presents the theoretical framework for analyzing interpreting performance. To that end,it reviews the Interpretative Theory of Translation that depicts interpreting as a three-stage process: comprehension, deverbalization and reformulation. Moreover, quality assessment of consecutive interpretation is discussed with a focus on credibility, acceptability and clarity.Chapter Three is a case analysis, mainly analyzing how to deverbalize the source text and how these interpreting techniques: part-of-speech conversion, omision, amplification, paraphrase and reformulation are used at the lexical, syntactical and discoursal levels.Chapter Four concludes that comprehension is the first step to interpreting, that deverbalization as a decisive factor in quality interpretation could be based on pragmatic and semantic meanings, and that reformulation is needed to ensure the smoothness of the targeted language. It also adds that the speakers’ fast speed with intense information and the interpreter’s state of mind on site may affect the interpreting performance. |
