In the study on the interpreting process, the operation and the definition of “deverbalization” in the interpretative theory of translation attract numerous attentions from interpreting researchers and become the key to defining interpreting process as two stages or three stages. Under the interpretative theory of translation, through an empirical study on consecutive interpreters, this dissertation is aimed to testify that in consecutive interpreting, “deverbalization” is a dynamic process of processing and producing both happening in two phases, instead of the static representation of the processed results and rather than an independent stage in the whole interpreting process, so as to support the relevant studies on the two-stage interpreting process, promote the development of the interpretative theory of translation and help to improve the training methods for consecutive interpreters.The cross-sectional empirical study has been adopted in this dissertation with consecutive interpreting tests(including E-C and C-E) and retrospective questionnaires conducted. The subjects of the experiment are 20 undergraduates from a university, majoring in English translation and interpreting. After analyzing the consecutive interpreting records and notes of the 20 subjects, relying on the retrospective questionnaires of the 20 subjects, this dissertation concludes that “deverbalization” is a dynamic process of processing and producing both taking place in two phases and it is the high-level comprehension part of the source language comprehension stage, instead of the static representation of the processed results and rather than an independent stage. Key points have been discussed in terms of implications of the results for the interpretative theory of translation, the study on the two-stage interpreting process and the consecutive interpreting pedagogy.
