The focus of this report is to present a translation practice based on the three chapters from Coffee for Dummies,a reference book written by Major Cohen and published in 2021.The book offers detailed and professional information and guidance for coffee enthusiasts and practitioners.The source text is characterized by a structured,objective,and neutral style,featuring concise language and numerous professional terms.To make sure that the translation can convey the same meaning of the source text while keeping its original style,the translator adopts Eugene A.Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory to guide the translation process.In this report,the translator begins by introducing the purpose of the translation project to establish the fundamental objectives.The source text is then analyzed in-depth and combined with the guiding theory to select applicable translation methods,including amplification,conversion,and inversion,with ongoing adjustments made during the translation process.Additionally,the report provides detailed analysis of the encountered problems during the translation practice,along with corresponding solutions.With the guidance of this theory,the translator renders a relatively readable version of target text to Chinese readers.However,some inevitable problems remain unsolved due to certain factors.Based on the experience of translating the reference book,the translator realized that unique challenges might arise when such kind of materials are translated.Through this process,the translator gained a deeper understanding of the coffee world and became more aware of how cultural differences can significantly influence language and translation.It is hoped that the report could provide insights and reference opinions for future translation practice in this field.
