Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus epidemic in 2019,preventive measures such as maintaining social distance and wearing masks have affected our normal interpersonal activities. In the case of limited language communication, nonverbal behavior plays a very good substitution role. Therefore, this translation practice chooses Chapter 10 “Love in the Period of COVID-19” in Nonverbal Communication in Close Relationships as the source text. With the analysis of the changes in the way of communication between intimate relationships during the COVID-19 epidemic in the source text, this translation practice aims to provide reference for students and psychologists in the fields of social psychology,non-verbal communication and interpersonal relationships.Chinese is different from English in language, culture and cognition,so the loss of content and form is inevitable in the process of translation. Therefore, the author takes Xia Tingde’s translation compensation theory to guide this translation practice, and analyzes the application of translation compensation means in academic text translation from the linguistic level and aesthetic level.Firstly,at the linguistic level, there are two compensation methods: lexical compensation and grammatical compensation. In view of the fact that the source text of this translation practice is an academic text with many professional terms, translation techniques such as amplification, paraphrase, combination, specification, generalization and annotation outside text are adopted to make up for the loss of lexical meaning caused in the translation process. To highlight objectivity, the academic text mainly uses long sentences and passive sentences. At the grammatical level, the author uses grammatical compensation strategy such as division and conversion to divide long sentences into simple short sentences and convert passive sentences into active sentences. Then the translation will conform to the expression habits of the target language. In the source text, the loss in aesthetic level is reflected in two aspects:aesthetic form and aesthetic function. In order to make up for the loss of these two aspects, the author reproduces the aesthetic value of the academic text through three compensation strategies : using different aesthetic form without sacrificing aesthetic function, annotations within text and conveying the faithful meaning by changing the aesthetic form to reproduce the aesthetic value of academic texts.Through this translation practice, the author concludes that in order to achieve the purpose of making up for the loss of translation to facilitate readers’ understanding, the translators can adopt appropriate translation compensation methods on the basis of faithfully conveying the original information. In addition, the author hopes that this report can provide reference materials for students and psychologists in the fields of social psychology, nonverbal communication and interpersonal relationship, and provide reference for translation of such kind of texts.
