This translation report takes the the fifth chapter of the scientific academic work The Climate Change In a Planetary Age as the source text.In this chapter,the author(Dipesh·Charkrabarty)discusses the great impact of climate change on the people at the bottom by taking the caste in India as the entry point.He offers the readers many philosophical thinking.The features of this text is highly scientific and academic.On the lexical level,there are many highly specialized terminologies about the humanities and philosophical,as well as a large number of words specific to the Indian caste system.On the textual level,the length of this chapter is quite long.And there are complex cohesive devices in the paragraph of this chapter,which brings the translator some challenge for translation.Guided by the Nida’s functional equivalence theory,this report firstly analyzes the function of words in the text on the lexical level.This report considers the cognitive expectations and reading experience of target readers,converts the part of speech of the word and add the meaning of the word through the conversion and addition.Then the original meaning can be conveyed faithfully.On the syntactical level,to improve the reading experience of target readers,this report converts the passive sentences into active sentences to improve readability of the translation.This report analyzes the characteristics of sentences according to the translator’s knowledge of linguistics.On the textual level,insisting Nida’s point of “the purpose of translation is communication”,this report adopts deletion to delete the unnecessary parts in the paragraph while the original meaning in the source text is saved as faithfully as possible.For the omitted content in the source text,this report adopts addition to avoid potential loss during translation.For the contents with repeated subjects or demonstrative pronouns in the text,the report adopts the combination to reduce the cognitive efforts of the target readers and ensure functional equivalence at the discourse level.Through this translation practice,translators have a deeper learning and understanding of academic text translation methods.It is hoped that this report can provide some help for translators who study parallel texts and scholars who study academic translated texts with functional equivalence theory.
