A Report On The Translation Of Fragile Futures:the Uncertain Economics Of Disasters,Pandemics,and Climate Change(Chapters 11-12)

This is a translation project report.The source text is Chapters 11 and 12 of Fragile Futures: The Uncertain Economics of Disasters,Pandemics,and Climate Change.The book elaborates on uncertain events such as pandemics,natural disasters and climate change and their consequences for the world,and aims to call for a larger,more global government role in dealing with these challenges,keeping economic inequalities low.The chosen text describes a series of problems caused by climate change and global warming and their serious impact on human life.The target readers of this translation are professional economists and common readers.With the aim to convey the message of the original text,reproduce the same writing style and produce a similar response,the translator chooses Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory as the guidance and attempts to allow the target readers to share the same reactions as that of the original and realize both formal equivalence and functional equivalence.The thesis discusses the application of functional equivalence in vocabulary,sentences,and discourse where the major problem in each level,namely proper nouns,long sentences,and textual cohesion,is analyzed and solved with corresponding solutions,such as annotation,division,inversion and reiteration so as to offer cultural background knowledge that target readers may lack and conform to the expression habits of the target language.The last chapter concludes the experience gained in the whole translation process and the remaining problems.
