A Report On The C-E Translation Of Beautiful Homeland:Traditional Anshun Villages (Excerpts)

This report is based on the C-E translation of Beautiful Homeland: Traditional Anshun Villages.This book describes 16 distinctive local villages and 56 Anshun villages that made the List of Traditional Chinese Villages.It involves the architecture,topography,landscape,history,local customs,folk culture,ethnic costumes and handicrafts of the local villages.The excerpt introduces Xiaochengpu,Houchang,Leijia,Benzhai and Xiushui villages,from the third batch of 27 traditional villages in Anshun.Traditional villages are a part of Chinese history and contain profound cultural deposits,so relevant translation can promote the dissemination of Anshun’s history and culture.Based on the linguistic characteristics of the source text,the translator chose Christiane Nord’s Function Plus Loyalty theory to guide this translation.This translation practice focuses on achieving the informative and appellative functions while being loyal to the target readers,author and initiator.The translator analyzes the translation from the perspectives of “Function” and “Loyalty” in this report.To make the target text conform to the features of English informative texts,the translator focuses on the accurate conveying of information through a field survey and ensures a concise and plain target language by adopting different translation techniques.To achieve the appellative function,the translator shifts perspectives and omits flowery expressions to meet the aesthetic taste of the target readers.To achieve the loyalty to the target readers,simplification,generalization,amplification and inversion are used to ensure the coherence and readability of the translation.Additionally,the translator adds annotations or explanations to supplement cultural information and reproduces the rhetorical effect through the transformation of similes and metaphors,thereby achieving loyalty to the sender and the source text.The translator hopes that this translation practice can provide feasible suggestions for cultural translation and widen the application scope of Function plus Loyalty.
