Abstract/Summary:
Yuan Kejia(1921–2008),a well-known poet, researcher of modernist literature, and poetry translator in modern China, devoted his life to the research and translation of Yeats. He translated about 183 poems by Yeats and published 4 papers related to Yeats. His translation and research aroused great attention. This paper explores his poetry creation poetics and its manipulation of Yeats’ s poetry translation from rhyme, rhythm, and imagery.Taking Lefevere’s poetics of translation as the theoretical framework, this thesis employs document analysis, textual analysis, and descriptive research methods to answer the following questions: 1)What were Yuan’s poetics in poetry translation? 2)How were Yuan’s rhyme and rhythm translation of Yeats’ s poetry manipulated by his poetics? 3)What was Yuan’s viewpoint of imagery translation, and how did it manipulate his poetry translation? This paper discovers that: firstly,Yuan’s poetics are reflected in two aspects:Yuan’s views on the relationship between content and form in poetry creation and the idea of dramatization of New Poetry.Secondly,In Yuan’s translation, manipulated by the former poetic viewpoint,Yuan adopts the three methods to translate rhyme:transplanting the original rhyme scheme, reconstructing the original rhyme scheme, and selecting the rhyme scheme based on emotion and two methods to translate rhythm: reproducing the original rhythm by replacing foot with dun and transforming the original rhythm based on replacing foot with dun.Thirdly, manipulated by the latter poetic viewpoint,Yuan forms the viewpoint of imagery translation that focuses on the objectivity and indirectness of imagery selection and structural arrangement. He adopts the methods of the representation of imagery, the disembodiment of imagery, and the enhancement of the malleability of imagery to translate imagery. In conclusion, this study aims to enrich the studies of Yuan Kejia’s poetry translation and shed methodological insights into the poetry translation practice.
