Self-repair is a common phenomenon in the consecutive interpretation. Its frequency and effectiveness have essential impact on quality of interpretation.Therefore,self-repair has been a valuable research field in translation and interpretation.Although some self-repairs can have positive effects on the output, there are also some others which can not reach the expected results and even generate negative influences. This kind of self-repairs is called improper self-repairs.As interpreters,it is essential to figure out what brings the improper self-repairs and come up with coping strategies to reduce their presence,so as to improve the quality of the output.Taking the mock conference titled “Lectures On The 40 th Anniversary of China’s Reform and Opening Up: Challenges and Innovation For Deepening Medical Reform” as the example case, this paper looks into the improper self-repairs in Chinese-to-English interpretation and its coping strategies.First, the author gives an overview of the previous research and theories, and gives a definition to the self-repair referred in this paper.Second, the author introduces the case in this paper and establishes the categories of self-repairs.Improper self-repairs analyzed in this case study is classified into two categories, each has two sub-categories: Information Repairs, which include Different Information Repairs and Information Precision Repairs, and Non-Information Repairs, which include Lapsus Linguae(i.e.speech error)and Repetition. At last, the author provides five coping strategies based on the examples analyzed in this paper. It is hoped that this case study can provide useful insights and coping strategies for scholars and interpreters, assist interpreters to make self-evaluation,and help interpretation students to improve fluency and output quality.
