Western watercolor painting has been introduced to China for more than a hundred years.With the joint efforts of generations of watercolor painters,it has been transformed into Chinese watercolor painting with ethnic characteristics,which has some similarities with the material language of Chinese ink painting due to the characteristics of its ontological language,plus the contemporary ink painting form language has broken the obsolete expression norms and developed a very rich style.In addition,the figure subject,as an important part of watercolor painting,must of course keep pace with the advancement.It can not only strengthen the professional ability of the painter,but also serve as an artistic image to depict the real society,thus indicating the deep meaning of the work that the artist wants to convey.Therefore,this paper takes an in-depth study of the formal language of ink painting to find out the language components that can be absorbed by watercolor figure painting,so as to expand the development space of watercolor painting forms.This article mainly adopts the methods of literature analysis,comparative analysis,and case study analysis to develop the main content of the article in depth.The first article mainly explains the background information of contemporary ink painting and watercolor figure painting,and combines a large amount of literature to analyze that there is a research foundation in this direction,but there is still room for further investigation.The second chapter begins with the main body of the article,which introduces in detail the formal language of ink painting,especially the characteristics of figure painting,and compares the similarities and differences between the two types of painting from aesthetic concepts to material techniques and finds areas of convergence.Chapter 3 focuses on the diverse formal language features of contemporary ink painting on figure subjects in terms of shape,brushwork,spatial composition,and color-ink relationships,and analyzes the personal styles and characteristics of representative painters to explore elements that can be used as references for watercolor figure painting.The fourth chapter is the focus of this paper.It first gives an overview of the development of Chinese watercolor figure painting and introduces the creative problems encountered in its rapid development,which stem from the lack of knowledge of local art and culture,and then specifically cites watercolor figure painters who have successfully used the formal elements of ink painting to further prove the feasibility of borrowing the language of ink painting.Finally,the fifth chapter combines the inspiration and influence of the previous article on the author’s own graduation creation of watercolor figures,with the expectation that the development of watercolor figure painting will be greatly enhanced by the form of ink painting.
