Theoretical Analysis Of "Observation Film" And Its Inspiration

Soda Sazuhiro,a new-generation Japanese documentary filmmaker who has attracted much attention on the international stage,advocates the practice of Observation Film based on unscripted shooting as the primary principle.Observation Film is inherited from Direct Cinema.This new documentary film concept has developed its own originality in the redefinition of observation.It provides a reference for Chinese documentary film creation and the construction of documentary theory.It is worthy of our further study.This article will explore the theoretical sources of Observation Film,combining with the creative practice of the graduation work Hu Shou Cha,discussing the aesthetic characteristics of Observation Film from the three aspects of contingency,subjectivity and ambiguity.The film analyzes the narrative strategy of Observation Film from two perspectives,and at the same time,through combing the enlightenment and limitations of Observation Film,in order to have a deep understanding of this documentary film concept.
