This paper is a translation practice report.The source texts are selected from American scholar Fernando M.Reimers’ s latest book,Primary and Secondary Education during Covid-19.As one of the first academic monographs on education during the epidemic,this book mainly analyzes the epidemic’s impact on education and introduces methods that various countries employ to deal with the problem.Chapter four mainly focuses on Finnish teaching in the outbreak as a successful case,and chapter seventeen globally reviews the measures taken by countries worldwide.Therefore,the translator selects Chapter four(Experiences of Moving Quickly to Distance Teaching and Learning at All Levels of Education in Finland)and Chapter seventeen(Conventions and Implications)so that Chinese front-line teachers in primary and secondary schools can learn from a successful case and have a comprehensive understanding of the teaching measures taken by countries around the world responding to the epidemic.Source texts are accurate and logical articles.According to Nord’s text analysis theory,source texts are typical of informative texts which mainly convey information.In the translation process,the translator takes Functional Theories of Translation as the guidance and instrumental translation as the leading translation strategy,striving to make translated texts achieve the same function as source texts.This report analyzes typical cases at the lexical,syntactic,and discourse levels.At the lexical level,the translator adopts translation techniques like supplementation and transposition to make the information conveyed more accurate and fluent.At the syntactic level,reorganization of sentence structures and voice conversion are employed to make the translation more explicit and logical.At the discourse level,explicitation and avoidance of repetition are used to make the translation more coherent.The significance of this translation practice is mainly reflected in the following two aspects: for one thing,the translation introduces successful foreign experience provides a reference for front-line primary and secondary school teachers,and improves teaching effects;for another,this translation practice is completed with the guidance of Functional Theories of Translation,so that it can provide a reference for relevant theoretical research and translation practice. |
