The uprising of the Miao people in Qianlong and Jiaqing in 1795 led to a large-scale adjustment of the social and political formation in the Miao region of Western Hunan. With the implementation of the garrison defense system, the government restricted the Miao and Han ethnic groups to different regions. The interaction between the Miao and Han was blocked, which affected the life of the Miao and triggered spontaneous exchanges between the Miao and Han.At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the Han people stole into the Miao land, traded with the Miao people, and formed some commercial settlements. With the establishment of the Republic of China and the collapse of the garrison defense system, the number of Han people in Miao inhabited areas increased, and the interaction between Miao and Han people became more frequent. With the establishment of the Han settlement, the relationship between the two is not only limited to the economic aspect, but also gradually extends to the aspects of culture and life. Therefore, this paper implements the modern Miao Han relationship to the Miao Han settlement in the Miao inhabited area, analyzes the historical evolution of the relationship between the majority group of Miao and the minority group of Han in the Miao inhabited area in Western Hunan under the ethnic distribution characteristics of "mixed living and small settlement" from the Perspective of the theory of "symbiosis and complementarity" from the perspective of the emergence and development of the Han settlement.According to the idea of this paper, the framework of the article is divided into six chapters in addition to the introduction and conclusion. The first chapter describes the background of the emergence of Han settlements in modern Miao inhabited areas, combs the relationship between Miao and Han from the "birth of Miao" to the Qianjia Miao people’s Uprising(1795),and briefly describes the content of the policy of "separation of Miao and Han" implemented by the government after the Miao people’s uprising. The second chapter, taking time as the axis, discusses the three stages of the development of the Han settlements in the Miao inhabited areas, namely, the staggered distribution before the Miao uprising, the dotted line distribution after the division of the Miao and Han,and the mixed living of the Miao and Han in the Republic of China. However, the rebirth of the Han settlement made the Miao land form a pattern of ethnic symbiosis in space. The third chapter mainly explores the reasons for the reconstruction of the Han settlement in the modern Miao ethnic group gathering area: the internal stratification of the Miao Han society under the village defense system is the internal factor, the virtualization of the village defense system is the realistic factor, and the complementarity of the needs of the Miao and Han is the core driving force.Third, the joint action promotes the formation of Han settlements. The fourth chapter mainly discusses the daily interaction between the Han settlement and the Miao settlement. This paper analyzes the structure of Miao Han settlement, and discusses the interaction of Miao Han intermarriage and language change. The fifth chapter analyzes the external manifestations of the contradictions between Miao and Han,such as the difference of political status, the unfairness of market trade and so on.In the face of the emergence and intensification of the contradiction between Miao and Han in the Miao ethnic group gathering area, how can the Miao and Han people rely on the government, intellectuals and common beliefs to adjust. The sixth chapter mainly discusses the characteristics of the changes in the relationship between Miao and Han villages in modern times, which are characterized by blending and conflict, and analyzes the role of geographical differences and the integration of the market in the benign interaction of the relationship between Miao and Han villages.
