| Elderly are an important part of the family,as well as a valuable asset to society.Against the backdrop of the increasingly severe ageing of young children,China is constantly improving its multi-pillar pension protection system and gradually improving its pension system. However, due to China’s national conditions, the number of elderly population groups is relatively large and the current protection is still inadequate, and family retirement,as the traditional mode of retirement in China, still occupies an important position, and children,as the main providers of family retirement, play a key role in the physical and psychological health of the elderly in their old age.At present,China’s three-child birth policy has been fully liberalized, and people have more autonomy to choose their own birth decisions. In this context, studying the influence of the children status on the subjective well-being of the elderly can better enable people to choose the best option when making early childbearing decisions, thus improving the quality of life in their later years and enjoying a happy old age.Through a review of relevant literature and feasibility analysis of the data, this paper selects the number of children and children’s socio-economic status in children’s status as explanatory variables, and self-rated happiness and emotional well-being as explanatory variables to measure subjective well-being.On the basis of relevant theories, uses the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study(CHARLS)data, multilevel linear model(HLM)was constructed to empirically analyse the effects of the children status on the subjective well-being of older people at both individual and household levels, and to analyse heterogeneity by urban and rural areas. The main conclusions were obtained as follows: first, the number of children had no significant effect on older adults’ self-rated well-being,but had a significant effect on their emotional well-being.Second,the improvement of children’s socio-economic status can significantly improve the self-rated happiness and emotional well-being of the elderly, thus improving the overall subjective well-being of the elderly;Third,in terms of the urban-rural differences in the factors influencing the subjective wellbeing of the elderly, there are significant urban-rural differences in the number of children on the self-rated happiness and emotional well-being of the elderly;children There were significant urban-rural differences in the influence of socioeconomic status on the self-rated happiness of the elderly, and no significant urban-rural differences in emotional well-being.Finally,based on the above main conclusions, this paper has obtained corresponding policy inspirations: firstly, promote family ageing and the culture of filial piety;secondly, optimise the allocation of educational resources and reduce the cost of raising them;thirdly, promote the implementation of ageing policies and improve social security;Fourth, focus on the mental and physical health of the elderly and adjust a positive mindset. |
