| United States begun setting up military bases in Asia-Pacific in the late 19 th century and early 20 th century and the military base system was formed during World War II.During the Cold War,US military bases were strengthened. After the Cold War,based on the complex security situation in the Asia-Pacific,the perception of Asia-Pacific geopolitical interests, the Asia-Pacific alliance system and the changes in US military technology and military operational theory, the United States has continuously adjusted its military bases in the Asia-Pacific.Based on Geopolitical theory and Containment theory, the deployment and adjustment of U.S.military bases is an important part of U.S.military strategy and even national security strategy. The essence of adjustment is to achieve geostrategic goal that preventing the emergence of potential hostile powers or alliances who can challenge U.S.hegemony.By containing rising powers in the Asia-pacific region especially China to maintain U.S.national interest. From the perspective of time,U.S military bases of adjustment shows a shrinking period of the number of military bases at the beginning of the end of the Cold War,a retrenchment reverses in the mid-1990 s and a volatility strengthening period since the 21 st century.Especially, since the Obama administration proposed the "Asia-Pacific Rebalancing" strategy, the US national strategic focus has shifted eastward. The key bases deployed by the US military in the Western Pacific include the Northeast Asia base group with Japan and South Korea as the core, the Southeast Asia base group with Singapore as the core, the Guam base group, the Diego Garcia military base and the Australian military base.U.S has upgraded and strengthened these military bases through the adjustment of staffing, geographical distribution, equipment and base island chain. With the adjustment of military bases, the characteristics are strategic, continuous, systematic and flexible. The U.S.military base in the Asia-Pacific is an important tool for maintaining the U.S interest.Through lasting adjustment can consolidate the U.S.hegemony and dominance in the Asia-Pacific.However,the inherent drawbacks of military bases may break the alliance system with America and rise the anti-American sentiment. The optimization of the system structure of US military bases in the Asia-pacific region and the improvement of the level of combat capability will inevitably have a more profound impact on the security of the Asia-pacific region and on the relations between major powers. In particular, the US has regarded China as a strategic competitor, that has derailed the development of China-U.S.relations.The continuous adjustment of the US military bases has destroyed the security environment around China and restrained Chinese development. It is of importance for China to enhance national strength, develop multilateralism and properly handle the competition and co-operation with US. |
