With the outbreak of the Korean War on June 25,1950,and U.S.stepping up military aid in Taiwan,the United States began to build the military bases in Taiwan.On Moreover,accompanied by the signing of the "US-Taiwan Mutual Defense Treaty" on the December 2,1954,the United States publicized the establishment of U.S.military base in Taiwan.This marked the official formation of the so-called"Western Pacific Defense Chain" that the United States has been trying to build after the war.Since then,the United States has actively strengthened its military presence in Taiwan,and its military bases has been developing rapidly under the stimulus of the two "Taiwan straits crisis" in the 1950s.In the late 1950s,the network of U.S.military bases in Taiwan was basically formed.During the 1960s,due to the US Asia-Pacific strategic focus changing to the Indochina region,especially Vietnam,and also combined with other facts such as the U.S.economy's weakness;Sino-Soviet relations;and the temporarily stable situation in the Taiwan Strait,the United States shifted gradually its main strategic resources to Vietnam and weakened relatively US military base in Taiwan.During this period,the United States focused attention on the software development of military bases in Taiwan,and to mend some base facilities all of this were reflected in 'The Agreement on The Status of the U.S.Army in Taiwan' in August 1965 which was to "legalize" the U.S.military bases in TaiWan.In general,from 1950 to 1964,the aim of the US military base in Taiwan was to serve the United States' Asia-Pacific strategy and was an important part of the United States' chain of containment in the Western Pacific to contain the new China,and its influence is extended to the present time.
