This study conducted a questionnaire survey in Xianfeng County,Enshi Prefecture,Hubei Province, focusing on 9-15 years old rural school children in ethnic minority areas, examining their visual cultural cognition from four aspects: the acceptance level and cognitive structure of Chinese visual culture, the knowledge and autonomous dissemination of their own ethnic visual culture, the understanding and attitudes towards different ethnic visual culture, and the learning status and acceptance trend of Chinese visual culture in media transmission. The survey results showed that rural children have good acceptance and cognitive levels towards their own and other ethnic cultures, and are willing to learn and understand multiple ethnic cultures. They display a high degree of tolerance and acceptance towards diverse ethnic cultures. This reveals that rural children in ethnic minority areas have a strong sense of cultural fusion, and generally have a high degree of recognition of Chinese visual culture. At the same time, these children have a strong political inclination towards the recognition of Chinese cultural symbols, which is beneficial for cultivating patriotism and promoting the process of building a Chinese national community. However, the survey results also reflect the existing issues in cultivating children’s Chinese national community awareness in rural areas: rural children have a relatively abstract recognition of Chinese cultural symbols and tend to identify with ancient cultural symbols rather than modern ones.Their knowledge of traditional culture is not comprehensive enough, and the ways of understanding cultural symbols are limited. The main reasons for these issues can be explained from three perspectives:firstly, the government,as the main authority responsible for protecting and promoting traditional ethnic cultural heritage, has misplaced its focus;secondly, the school,as the primary place for cultivating Chinese national community awareness among rural children, has an inadequate education system;thirdly, the family,as the most influential educational environment for children, often lacks sufficient grooming and awareness.Based on the above reasons, this study proposes targeted policy recommendations for the three major entities of government, schools, and families to build Chinese national community awareness among rural school children in ethnic minority areas.Firstly, the government should firmly grasp the "cultural" mainline, and conduct appropriate cultural propaganda and protection activities with the goal of preserving, inheriting, and promoting excellent traditional culture.Secondly, schools should establish a complete system for cultivating Chinese national community awareness, spark children’s learning interest with diverse teaching methods, improve learning efficiency with innovative education concepts, and achieve comprehensive and professional ethnic cultural cognition through rich teaching content. This study can enrich the research path in the field of Chinese national community awareness in theory and provides practical methods for cultivating such awareness among rural children in ethnic minority areas. It analyzes the current situation and problems of Chinese national community awareness among rural children in ethnic minority areas in depth, and proposes solutions that serve as a reference for future research on building Chinese national community awareness in rural areas.
