| The concept of deterrence by denial was formed in the Cold War,but the opposing idea of deterrence by punishment always dominated the practice of the Cold War.After the end of the Cold War,the overall goal of the United States shifted from the pursuit of strategic stability to the pursuit of strategic advantage, and along with the accelerated proliferation of new technologies, the US military began to gradually focus on the reconstitution of denial forces, and the importance of deterrence by denial was again highlighted. This paper analyzes how the application of US deterrence by denial has gradually focused on China on the basis of revising and perfecting the definition of deterrence of denial. This paper explores the path of US deterrence towards China in the past decade from three perspectives: damage limitation capability,multi-domain deterrence, and technology empowerment, which reflects that the United States intends to take advantage of China from basic technology to equipment development to combat system. The US policy of deterrence by denial towards China has largely formed an important basis for the “Asia-Pacific rebalancing” strategy and the “Indo-Pacific strategy”,and has had a profound impact on regional allies and domestic politics, but the policy also poses problems that are equally complex and difficult to solve.By exploring the many contradictions and limitations of the doctrine of deterrence by denial, this paper analyzes the many challenges facing the US deterrence policy towards China, especially the impact on the fragile Sino-US strategic stability.By summarizing the practice and impact of the US deterrence by denial towards China, this paper also offers some views on China’s response, hoping that a series of internal and external initiatives will strive to maintain basic Sino-US crisis stability and promote the benign development of military technology competition. |
