Since the reform and opening up,China’s urbanization process has been accelerated, and the changes of social background have also profoundly affected the construction of female media images and the formation of body views. The magazine of Fitness and Beauty reported fitness and bodybuilding exercises and reflected the body views, which played an important role in shaping female body images. Therefore, this article selected nearly 400 reports from Fitness and Beauty from 1980 to 2020 as the research object, and used the literature method, content analysis method and expert interview method,to explore the media images of urban women and the changes in female body views. The study found that the images of urban women by Fitness and Beauty can be roughly divided into three stages. The first period was from 1980 to 1995,when the urbanization process in China was in the initial stage, and sports participation was mainly "spectatorship".The magazine focused on popularizing the knowledge of bodybuilding and shaped the image of strong muscles of female bodybuilders. The second period was from 1996 to 2007,when China’s urbanization was in a stage of accelerated development, with "consumption-oriented" sports participation as the main part. While promoting fitness, the magazine reinforced the slender and sexy image of female stars. The third period was from 2008 till now, when the "new four modernizations" were put forward and the sports industry was booming. The magazine focused on the promotion of fitness business, highlighted the"experience-oriented" sports participation, and shaped the image of professional women in the sports industry. At the same time, these three periods also correspond to three different views of female body.In the first period of the open city, magazines emphasized the female body view of "show-building".In the second period of the commercial city, the magazine highlighted the female body view of "consumer fitness".In the third period, the urbanization development entered a new growth stage. In the context of sustainable development, the magazine has also promoted a more"participatory health" view of female body.It should be pointed out that the female body view born in different periods was not a simple substitution relationship. On the contrary,in the complicated reform process of Chinese sports, they superimposed and influenced each other, and deeply influenced the construction of female media images. However,Fitness and Beauty the fitness and bodybuilding activities at home and abroad, and they usually focused on large cities with superior economic conditions and more advanced ideological concepts. They occasionally report on the situation in second and third tier cities, while there are very few reports on rural or underdeveloped areas. At the same time, when magazines report on female images, they often magnified their glamorous side to the audience, while ignoring the various difficulties they faced. The lack of these reports is not conducive to truly reflecting the full pictures of women in society, resulting in the distortion of the images of women in society. These magazines’ construction of urban female body views,on the one hand, they encouraged women to liberate and develop themselves through fitness and bodybuilding,on the other hand, they fell into the consumer culture. The issues raised by these reports deserve equal attention. Therefore, the media should avoid the report of curiosity hunting or consumption, pay more attention to its comprehensive social effect, advocate a more scientific and rational view of health, regard sports as a way of life, encourage more women to participate in sports, and promote the establishment of a more harmonious modern China.
