| As an emerging destination country for immigration,China welcomes international immigrants from all over the world.Obtaining higher social status and seeking more economic returns are important factors that drive immigrants to China.Based on the 2018-2019 "Survey of Foreigners in Hangzhou"(SFRC)data, through multiple linear regression, binary classification and multinomial logistic regression, this paper focuses on the impact of human capital and social capital on social status and economic status. It also clarifies the compensation mechanism of social capital to human capital. The study found that the impact of human capital on status acquisition is different.General human capital(education level)has a positive impact on the status acquisition of immigrants;human capital in the migration process(migration experience)has a negative impact on the status acquisition of immigrants;destination human capital(education in China,Chinese level, length of stay in China))on status attainment varied:Chinese proficiency and length of stay in China played a key role in improving status attainment, while educational experience in China was not.At the same time, social capital also affects the status of immigrants.Home country networks shape the living resources and emotional solace available to immigrants, but have a weaker impediment to the status of immigrants. In contrast, the network in China has provided instrumental support for the status of immigrants due to its advantages in resources and culture.Although the international network established based on similar situations does not help immigrants to enter the labor market,it helps immigrants to engage in high-end occupations and obtain higher economic returns.Social capital can weaken the disadvantage of human capital to status acquisition and enhance the competitive advantage of human capital. The disadvantage of educational experience and Chinese proficiency in China can be compensated by the network connections accumulated by immigrants. The above findings explore the labor market participation characteristics of international immigrants from atypical immigrant countries, enrich the research on status acquisition of foreigners in China, and expand the theory of immigration status acquisition from developed labor markets. |
