The 2021 Government Work Report pointed out that employment is the biggest livelihood.As the highest degree of higher education in China,the cultivation quality of doctoral students is related to the development level of overall education in China,so the employment of doctoral graduates is particularly important.Paper publication can not only reflect the scientific research level of doctoral graduates,but also an important bargaining chip for future employment.Universities will carry out different forms of assessment for doctoral candidates,but the core of the assessment is still academic research.Based on this background,this study selected the social science doctoral graduates who graduated from 42 "world-class university" universities from 2010 to 2020 as the research object,and used the ordinary least squares method to analyze the relationship between doctoral graduates’ thesis publication and university employment.On the one hand,this study applies human capital theory,social capital theory and signal theory to the employment of doctoral graduates,and verifies the influence of thesis publication on the employment of doctoral graduates in colleges and universities.On the other hand,this study can not only provide the basis for the education authorities to formulate the doctoral training policy and the reform of scientific research evaluation,but also ensure the scientificity of policy making and the fairness of scientific research evaluation.Moreover,it is helpful for universities to adjust the training objectives of doctoral students and guide the employment of doctoral graduates.It can also mobilize the initiative of doctoral students to publish papers,play the active role of the supervisor,and promote the promotion of employment level.The research content mainly includes the following aspects.Firstly,this study sorted the previous literature into three aspects:first,the impact of dissertation publication on the career choice of doctoral graduates;second,the impact of supervisor status on the employment of doctoral graduates;and finally,the impact of university background on the employment of doctoral graduates.Second,the previous studies on human capital theory,signaling theory and social capital theory are sorted out,and the relationship between the above theories and this research is analyzed.Third,taking doctoral graduates in social sciences of research universities as the research object,the ordinary least squares method is used to regression the benchmark model to verify the relationship between the number of published papers and the university employment of doctoral graduates,and to test the moderating effect of supervisor identity and university background on the two.Fourthly,to verify the relationship between the quality of paper publication and the employment of doctoral graduates in colleges and universities,and to test the moderating effect of supervisor identity and college background on the two,the heteroscedastic test of the model was done with White test.The conclusions of this study are as follows:Firstly,there are differences in the quantity and quality of doctoral dissertation published,which are mainly manifested by differences in the quantity and quality of individual dissertation published by different genders,different supervisors,different graduation years and different graduation institutions;Secondly,the effect of thesis publication on the employment of doctoral graduates is weaker than other factors,that is,compared with personal characteristics and regional characteristics,the effect of thesis publication is not obvious.Thirdly,college background plays an important role in the relationship between thesis publication and university employment,that is,college background not only positively promotes the thesis publication of doctoral graduates,but also positively regulates the relationship between thesis publication and university employment.Fourth,compared with other factors,the role of supervisor status on college employment is not obvious,that is,personal characteristics and regional characteristics have a greater impact on college employment of doctoral graduates.Fifthly,the employment of PhD graduates in universities is affected by many factors,such as individual level,regional level and policy level.Personal characteristics will have an impact on the college employment of doctoral graduates,that is,the performance of men in both paper publication and college employment is better than that of women on the whole.Urban economic conditions,basic education level and medical level will also become an important reference for PhD graduates to choose universities.Compared with the existing researches,this study tries to make marginal contributions from the following aspects.First,applying the theory to the employment of doctoral graduates in universities can verify the applicability of the above three theories in the field of doctoral education in China.Secondly,the analysis of the research issues of educational economics in the context of multi-disciplinary knowledge can promote the exchange and reference between disciplines,and further broaden the research horizon of educational economics.Thirdly,this study focuses on the doctoral graduates from social sciences and pays attention to their employment problems,which can provide scientific suggestions and important references for rationally guiding the "employment difficulties" of doctoral students.
