The General High School Geography Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition)includes "attaching importance to problem-based teaching" as one of the teaching recommendations;the country accelerates the implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy and needs a large number of innovative talents.Geography education should keep pace with the times and adopt problem-based teaching to cultivate the innovation ability of high school students,so that students can achieve natural growth of knowledge and advancement of thinking ability in the process of solving geography problems, and then improve their innovation ability.Based on the problem-based teaching in geography, this paper proposes an optimal strategy for cultivating innovation ability of high school students, develops new ideas for the research of innovation ability strategy of high school students, and provides reference for front-line teachers to use problem-based teaching to cultivate innovation ability of high school students. This paper uses literature research method to understand the research background, the current situation of domestic and international research on problem-based teaching and innovation ability, and then clarify the research content and significance and determine the research method. This paper follows the idea of problem formulation, problem analysis and problem solving.By reviewing the literature on problem-based teaching and innovation ability, this paper defines the concepts of problem-based teaching and innovation ability of high school students, clarifies the three connotations and external performance characteristics of innovation ability of high school students, and elaborates the relationship between problem-based teaching and innovation ability of geography based on the concepts;identifies the nearest development area theory, constructivism theory and multiple intelligence theory as the theoretical basis of this paper.Through the questionnaire and interview methods, this paper investigates the current situation of geography problem-based teaching to cultivate innovation ability of high school students, and finds that students’ questioning ability, curiosity of innovation consciousness, precision of innovative thinking, novelty and precision of innovative skills need to be improved;innovative thinking and skills will have significant differences in terms of grade and gender. The following problems exist in problem-based teaching of geography to cultivate innovative ability: the introduction situation is old and lacks innovation;the design of problem chains pointing to the cultivation of innovative ability is more difficult;the place of learning and research is limited to the classroom, which makes it difficult to cultivate innovative ability;the attention to students’ innovative ability is not enough;teachers lack guidance, and students propose solutions from few angles and lack innovation;the inductive summary form is single, which limits students’ innovative ability This paper proposes that the current problems should be addressed. In view of the existing problems, this paper proposes the optimal strategies to cultivate high school students’ innovation ability by using geography problem-based teaching: enriching the form of classroom introduction to stimulate innovation ability;improving the quality of problems to cultivate innovation ability;carrying out problem research to improve innovation ability;attaching importance to induction and summarization to develop innovation ability;strengthening migration application to expand innovation ability;and improving the evaluation system to implement innovation ability.Based on the optimization strategy, this paper divides the geography problem-based teaching process into three stages: preparation, implementation, and reflection, and explains the specific tasks of teachers and students in each stage.Based on the teaching process, the section of Meteorological Hazards is used as an example to carry out teaching practice and cultivate students’ innovation ability.
