Since ancient times,mathematics has been widely used in people’s production and life,and is an important tool to promote social progress.At the beginning of the 21st century,various countries have emphasized the application of mathematics,especially the construction of mathematical models to solve practical problems.This requires students to have a certain level of modeling ability.In the compulsory education stage,students can have the most exposure to mathematical applications,which is an important tool and way to cultivate students’ application ability.This article identifies research questions by reviewing literature on mathematical modeling and mathematical application problems:(1)dividing the construction of models in application problems into four levels,and developing test questions to test students’ construction of mathematical models;(2)Develop a survey questionnaire to investigate the learning status of junior high school students in building mathematical application problem models;In order to achieve the objectives of the above research questions,this article will use various research methods for empirical research.Firstly,the design test questions will be tested on junior high school students.The mathematical application questions involved in the test include questions of different difficulty and situations,divided into four levels.The test results will reflect the students’ ability to construct mathematical models.Secondly,a survey questionnaire will be developed to understand the current learning status of junior high school students in constructing mathematical application problem models.Based on the analysis of test questions and survey questionnaires,it is found that there are several main problems in the model construction of mathematical application problems for junior high school students:insufficient model construction and transformation ability,lack of strategies for using mathematical knowledge to solve application problems,need to improve understanding and analysis ability,high calculation error rate,and insufficient reading comprehension ability.Finally,the following effective teaching suggestions are proposed to address the shortcomings of students in building models:cultivating the ability to construct and transform models,guiding students to master necessary problem-solving strategies,emphasizing the cultivation of students’ understanding and analysis abilities,strengthening the cultivation of ideas and error management,and emphasizing the cultivation of reading skills.and the management of wrong questions,pay attention to the training of reading skills.
